Empire State Building to Honor Comic Strip Anniversary

The Empire State Building will shine green lights onto the city in honor of the spinach-loving sailor's 75th anniversary from Friday to Monday.

The Popeye comic strip was introduced to the world on January 17, 1929. Its creator, Elzie Segar, was born and raised in Chester, which is a town along the Mississippi River some 50 miles south of St. Louis.

Locals believe Segar based some of his characters on people he knew in Chester. Fans hold a picnic there for the character every September.
