ROCKFORD, Ill. (AP) -- Officials in northern Illinois sentenced a Roscoe man to 36 years in prison yesterday for the 2005 fatal shooting of his father.
Daniel Ward was found dead his home in December of 2005. He had been shot in the head with a rifle.
His son Damien Ward was 18-years-old at the time of the crime. He pleaded guilty late last year.
Winnebago County Circuit Judge Rosemary Collins says it's shocking to have a son kill a father.
Roscoe Police Sergeant Jamie Evans says Damien Ward appeared to be dead when police first arrived on the scene. He had taken a number of pills and was unconscious on the bathroom floor.
Damien Ward says he's sorry and that he doesn't know why he did what he did. He read a prepared statement in court yesterday.
