Authorities in Florida say a truck driver from Rockford was transporting explosives for the military with his wife when his freight truck collided head-on with another vehicle on the Florida turnpike.
Three college students were traveling south on the turnpike when their sport utility vehicle crossed the median and collided with the truck driven by Glen Rice.
A 22-year-old woman was pronounced dead on the scene. Two other passengers in the SUV were taken to a hospital in critical condition. No one in the truck was injured.
Authorities shut down the turnpike after the accident because the force of the collision ruptured a case of blasting caps. The explosives were being transported to Eglin Air Force Base in the Florida Panhandle.
