Lung Association says more people want to quit smoking since tax hike

Higher prices seem to be driving more people away from cigarettes.

The American Lung Association says it has seen a sharp jump in calls from people who want to quit smoking. The hotline normally gets 100 calls a day, but now it's getting up to 150 calls.

Spokeswoman Kathy Drea says many callers cite the state's higher cigarette tax as their reason for wanting to quit.

Illinois recently raised the tax by $0.48, to a total of $0.98 per pack.

The Lung Association has increased staffing at its hotline to handle the extra calls.

The Quitline number is 1-866-QUIT-YES.
