For the first time in 36 years, the jingle of ice cream trucks will return to Loves Park streets.
Loves Park mayor Darryl Lindberg was the first to buy ice cream from the "Kroozin Kooler" truck. Tonight, aldermen approved an ordinance that would allow vendors to sell on city streets for the first time since the 1970's. The ban was put into effect after a five-year-old Machesney Park girl was hit and killed by a car while chasing after an ice cream truck. City council members unanimously approved the amendment last week but there were three "no" votes tonight.
"Kinda surprised with the no votes, but in the end we have a 6-3 yes vote so, I'm happy and excited, I can't wait to come down to city hall to get my permit," says Kenny Polhamus, owner of Kroozin Koolers.

Well what would he care? He probably lives in a gated community where he won't have to listen to that demented jack-in-the-box-carnival-calliope blaring out of amplified speakers straight into his back yard every afternoon. People have this romantic notion of the ice cream man in an immaculate white suit and starched cap selling tasty treats from cooler in the back of a bicycle; and that's NOT how it is. The reality is rusted out junk-heap with a lousy muffler, non-functioning safety flashers, and an over-amplified 15 second loop of some excruciating annoying electronic rendition of "Oh my darling..." being served by unclean looking and sloppily dressed weirdos. People who, if it weren't for the truck (such as it is) you wouldn't let your kids get anywhere near! Do they have a right to make a living: yes. Do I have a right to say what type of commercial activity goes on in my neighborhood: yes! So... STAY OUT!
I am very disappointed with the alderman who voted to return these dangeous vendors to the streets of Love Park. Thank you Aldermen Novak, Brinker and Holmes for your intelligent and responsible vote.
