St. Mary's Janesville Hospital and Dean Clinic Janesville are going to be built off I-90 and Highway 11. This is one of the largest construction projects the area has seen in a long time and is expected to create hundreds of new jobs.
"50 bed hospital that will be all private rooms," says Dean Health System President and CEO Craig Samitt.
The medical campus will hire close to 350 people. And provide work for more than 150 others who land potential contracts cleaning, providing security and other hospital necessities. And of course jobs in construction. This could create new opportunities for those who used to be employed by GM.
"There may not be a direct correlation between autoworkers to the clinical environment, there certainly is comparable skills, whether it's technical services or technician services, we're always looking for talented staff and I certainly think we'd explore career development for those interested in transitioning from one career to another," says Samitt.
"That makes up for a fraction of what was lost and anything that makes up for a significant fraction like that has to be good," says Peter Webster, who works in downtown Janesville.
No tax dollars will be used to build the 150 million dollar facility, yet it will be giving back a projected 124-million dollars generated in sales tax revenue. However some question whether Janesville needs a second hospital.
"We could use that right now, sure but health care isn't guaranteed that it will hold the recession," says Melissa Doerr, who's husband used to work for GM.
Construction officially begins in October and will last about 24 months before the hospital starts seeing patients in late 2011.
