Seat Belt Use

The number of tickets Illinois State Police issued to motorists for not wearing safety belts has soared since a tougher law took effect.

State police say they ticketed 22,600 drivers for not wearing seatbelts in July and August. That's up 61 percent from the 14,000 they issued in the same months last year.

The law that took effect in July allows police to pull over motorists for safety belt violations alone. Previously, officers could only cite non-belted motorists if they were stopped for another violation.
