Understanding Attendance Zones

By  |

Parents, board members and anyone with ties have been studying up on Attendance Zones. At the Rockford School Board meeting members needed clarification about what criteria’s zoned schools are based upon. Those criteria are things like predictability, cost, and comprehension. Board members also saw some research outlining what zoned schools can accomplish verses choice schools.

This was the board meeting that many parents were asked to voice their concerns about the proposed attendance zones. Only two parents stepped forward. Parent Council Secretary Cheryl Maggio said, “Sell it. Do for this vote what you did for the “Kids Win” campaign. The district spent time and resources educating the community on the effects of this referendum. Do the same for this vote." Parent Council is urging anyone with something to say to attend the public forum set for Thursday, December 14, 2006 at 5:30 p.m. at Auburn High School.

The board voted to give School Board Attorney Steve Katz a 3% raise. Superintendent Dr. Dennis Thompson also got a 3% boost and an $8,000 bonus. Thompson's contract runs through May of 2009.
