Beloit's smoking ban does not apply to taverns. But many restaurant owners are worried their customers will cross the state line next July. That's when Beloit's smoking ordinance goes into effect.
The measure will make two year exceptions for restaurants such as Denali's. But owners have to prove they lost at least 15 percent of their revenue because of the smoking ban.
Many restaurant owners say the paperwork is too lengthy to be worth it. Eric Newnham says he already spent thousands on air filtration systems for the smoking section of his restaurant.
He expects his smoking customers will dine at surrounding communities once they're banned from Beloit.
