West Nile Virus is confirmed in Winnebago County as a dead crow found Monday tested positive for the virus. The crow was found in a neighborhood on Rockford’s south east side.

Winnebago County Health Department administrators say West Nile has been in the Rockford area since fall of last year. Three major projects are underway to slow the spread of West Nile, the health department will be placing six mosquito traps in various locations to track mosquito's. They'll also continue to collect and send in dead crows for West Nile testing.

Common symptoms of the virus include minor fever, along with body aches and pains. Less than one percent of people infected develop severe symptoms, those include disorientation and high fever, and in rare cases can lead to death.
