They came to mark the second anniversary of the September 11th attacks on New York and Washington, DC. More than 200 children and young adults who lost loved ones in the attack recited the names of the victims, including their own lost relatives.
Some of the victims' family members knelt to touch the Trade Center's bedrock during the ceremony, and a few scooped up handfuls of dirt.
Moments of silence and the tolling of bells also marked the ceremony. The moments of silence marked the times when hijacked airliners slammed into the twin towers. The bells marked the times when the towers fell.
