A failed April referendum is forcing the Rockford park district to make some tough decisions about programs and facilities. Tuesday night, the park board considers what action to take.

At its meeting Tuesday night, the Rockford park district will look at ways to cut $400,000 in programs and services, but further cuts could come next year as board members expect to shift more than $2 million from programs to security and maintenance funds.

This is part of a three-year plan to balance the district's budget. Park board members say that will come through cuts and efforts to generate new revenues. This could mean new fees, shortened hours or seasons for facilities or simply the elimination of programs. The district wants to avoid further loans and debt.

Many residents are expected to turn out to speak against the cuts but park board members say the public can't expect greater services without a financial commitment from the community and the city.
