New State Law

A new state law will allow police agencies in Illinois to seize and sell the vehicle of anyone caught driving with a suspended or revoked driver's license.

Gov. George Ryan signed the bill Tuesday. The new law takes effect Wednesday and affects drivers who lost their license because of drug or alcohol charges, or were convicted of reckless homicide or leaving the scene of an injury accident.

The new law allows a violator to surrender title of a vehicle to a spouse if it is the only means of transportation for the family. But if there is a second offense, the car can be taken away.
