Beloit fire investigators say the hazardous chemical spill at a jewelry store Monday was tear gas.
Grand Avenue near State was evacuated all day as fire crews investigated the spill at Brill Jewelers.
The tear gas came out of a 100-year-old safe. At that time, the gas was a normal deterrent from theft in commercial safes.
