Same-sex couples from outside Iowa have flocked to border counties since the state legalized gay marriage.

More than half of the same-sex couples who applied to be married in Pottawatomie County in western Iowa came from Nebraska, one of four neighboring states with constitutional amendments banning gay marriage. Other applicants in border counties came from Illinois, Minnesota and Wisconsin.

Troy Fienhold-Haasis says he and his partner will move to Council Bluffs from Omaha to get the same rights and privileges as married couples.

Republican state Sen. David Hartsuch of Bettendorf says the Iowa Supreme Court imposed its will on neighboring states. He says the issue will be a focus in the 2010 elections.
