A teenager has been arrested in connection with the shooting of an Auburn High School student.
Police say Jesus Camacho, 18, opened fire while he was a passenger in an SUV.
Just before nine Monday morning Rockford police responded to Auburn High School's freshman campus after a student is shot across the street. 23 news reporter Chris Norman has the story.
Laura Lewis knew today was the anniversary of the Columbine shootings, but didn't think it would hit so close to home.
"It's been on the news all morning long I was getting ready to go to work and everything, and then I hear this, I had to go get him," says Laura Lewis
Lewis pulled her son Isiaiah out of class after getting a text message telling her there was a shooting nearby.
"She said I am the only baby she has, and I don't want her to worry," said Isaiah Smith.
Before classes began Monday morning, a 14 year-old Auburn student was shot in the leg, just across the street from the Freshman Campus on Pierpont avenue. The teen was able to walk into school to get help. He was taken to Rockford Memorial Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Immediately after the shooting, police locked down the Auburn campus, as well as McIntosh elementary across the street.
"We have extra officers inside the school and the area at this time just to let the people know that it's ok to go into the schools at this time," said Deputy Chief Theo Glover.
Police say before the shooting, a red Chevy Blazer pulled up next to the student, and exchanged words before firing. They also believe this is an isolated incident, not connected to the Columbine anniversary. But that didn't stop Isaiah Smith, another Auburn freshman from thinking 'What if?'
"What i'm thinking is what if things escalated and someone came into the school shooting like NIU or Virginia Tech," Smith said.
Police are still investigating the shooting. So far the car allegedly involved in the shooting has been found on Rockford's southeast side. Deputy Chief Greg Lindmark says officers are still searching for the suspects.. but they are not students at Auburn.

I can't believe that police even brought up the idea of Columbine. Every single day on the scanner the police are called for fights around 3 or 3:30 and I hear them say it's the group from Auburn again. Every day they know they're going to get this call and every time they say they've moved them along. Instead of moving them along, why not some arrests? They're making fools of the Police Dept. AND wasting precious manpower when the Police could be used elsewhere. The Rockford Police Dept. needs to rethink their strategy because this is NOT working. And just think....it's only April!
