Where can you find dolls, lightbulbs, fine china and even glass eyes? In the outhouse of course! The Byron museum of history has been excavating old outhouses for the last ten years and they have unearthed everything from old glass bottles to human bones.

"Most homeowners in the past have agreed to turn over the items to the museum for use in the exhibit. It is one of our more popular exhibits especially with young children who don't have a concept of outdoor bathrooms." says museum executive director Jessica McCanse.

The museum is already looking for the next toilet excavation site, which they hope to explore in June, and one doodie diver from past digs is looking forward to new discoveries on the next descent.

"I found a frying pan and you could actually still see the beans in it and I could just tell that this lady must have burned dinner, fallen asleep or something and burned dinner and threw the whole thing down the privy. She didn't want her husband to see." says outhouse archaeologist Kimberly Boyden.

The job isn't nearly as dirty as it sounds, everything in the pit has long since been converted to soil, but just imagine what our ancestors would think of us today, digging through their waste in order to find their trash.

The museum is looking for new dig sites. If you live in a house that is 100 years or older and want to see if any hidden treasures are buried in your backyard contact the museum at 815-234-5031.

The museum is also seeking volunteers. Although some members of the team are experts, many have little or no experience.
