The accident happened around 9:30 Friday morning on I-90 about three miles east of Genoa Road. Police say the car was heading westbound when the driver apparently lost control of her vehicle.
The momentum sent the vehicle spinning into the highway divider. It struck a construction tractor that was sitting in the median. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene. The passenger was airlifted to Rockford Memorial Hospital. Police say the situation could have been much worse.
Traffic was backed up for several miles. The accident shut down both east and westbound lanes of I-90. Police say everything has been cleaned up and traffic should be back to normal.
