Wind Farms Cleared by Pentagon Officials

WASHINGTON (AP) -- A letter to Illinois Senator Dick Durbin from a high-ranking official at the Pentagon clears the way for wind mills to operate in the state.

Today's letter from Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense David Broome says that the Federal Aviation Administration has determined that the wind turbine facilities currently operating in Illinois pose no hazard to military radar.

It says the same is true for wind mills under construction that have already been reviewed by the F-A-A.

Broome says a recently prepared Defense Department report can't and will not be used to change the current F-A-A determination of the projects in Illinois.

Durbin and Illinois' other Democratic senator, Barack Obama, had said they would block the nomination of a nominee to be an assistant secretary at the Pentagon, unless they were advised that the development of wind mills would not be stopped by the report.

Durbin and Obama dropped their hold on the nomination of Robert Wilkie today.
