The Illinois Department of Public Health says the grant money totals $180,000. Half of the money comes from the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the rest from the state.

The state says keeping track of Culex mosquitoes gives local health departments information to guide them in telling the public about the risk of virus transmission.

The county public health departments receiving $10,000 each are:

  • DuPage

  • Henderson

  • Jefferson

  • Kendall

  • Knox

  • Montgomery

  • Vermilion

  • Bureau

  • Christian

  • Ford-Iroquois

  • Greene

  • Livingston

The Egyptian Health Department also received a grant.
