A Rockford police officer shoots and kills a man in the downtown area Monday night. It all started with a pursuit of a stolen vehicle.

Dead is 39-year-old James Gerth of Rockford. Police say two officers spotted the stolen vehicle at the intersection of State and Winnebago. One officer got out of the car ordering the driver to also get out. Police then say the man started to drive in the officer’s direction.

The officer fired four shots at Gerth. He was pronounced dead at the scene. No gun was found in his car. Neither of the officers were injured.

The police officers involved are being put on administrative leave until the case is heard before a grand jury.
