One alderman with more experience dealing with a city budget than almost anyone will soon exit council chambers for his last time. Rockford Alderman Victory Bell is retiring. He's been on the city council since 1971. Tonight, a farewell celebration is being held at Pilgrim Baptist Church. Bell says he feels it's best to leave politics now so he could spend more time with his family and that he's experienced great changes over the last 38 years.
"As an elected official starting off in 1971, I have seen as much as probably anybody when it relates to progress for African Americans in the political arena," says Bell.
Bell is a Democrat and represents the fifth ward. He will be replaced April 7th during the general election.
