It has been a debate for about two years but Monday night, the Belvidere City Council finally took action.
By the end of this year we will all begin to see construction of what's being called the Commercial Gateway Center in Belvidere. The first building to go up is Wal-Mart.
The Belvidere City Council unanimously approved the annexation of 87 acres at Genoa Road and U.S. 20. Wal-Mart Supercenter and about 25 businesses will be the gateway to the community. The reason why the plans took so long to approve, council members were concerned with the aesthetics and a sales tax rebate.
DareCloud Development is also giving the city one million dollars for road improvement. Another concern was for smaller businesses, but both the mayor and economic developers say the gateway will open a lot of other doors.
Ground breaking is set to happen this year. No final word on when the Wal-Mart Supercenter will be open.
