Family Giving Up Truck Stop After 75 Years

Thursday was the last day the famous truck stop on Interstate 55 near McLean will be open under their names.

Chuck Beeler says a Providence, Rhode Island firm has purchased the highway oasis and will lease its restaurant and gasoline station to other companies. He says it will still be called Dixie for now.

Charlotte Beeler's grandfather J.P. Walters and her father John Geske opened Dixie in 1928 along what was then a brand-new Route 66. That legendary road carried thousands of motorists to the Dixie until I-55 replaced it about 1970.

Illinois Route 66 Association President Jeff LaFollette says he is hoping the association will convince the new owners to keep the Route 66 Hall of Fame there.
