A call for workers sends dozens of job seekers to a local company. Servicom, a Machesney Park call center, plans to hire hundreds of new employees after securing a contract with Comcast Cable.

Call center employees are usually the ones doing the dialing, but on Wednesday calls and visitors streamed into Servicom. News that the Machesney Park call center is expanding spread quickly and jobs seekers like Denita Wilson showed up for a shot at a customer service position.

"I had to take a typing test and spelling test. It was like I was in school again. But I guess they want to test your skills before they take a chance on you," says Denita.

Wilson's been looking for a job for more than a year now and says customer service is her calling.

"I'm actually happy that they're bringing call centers here. It opens up a lot of doors for me. I'm not an industrial person so it opens up a lot of avenues for me. I'm glad."

Through a contract with Comcast Cable, Servicom could add more than 700 positions over the next few years. Company leaders say they chose to expand at this facility for many reasons, but one of the biggest is the available pool of qualified workers.

David Jefferson, president of Jnet Communications said, "I think that the unemployment rate is such that this right here would align perfectly with a supply of labor that already exists in the region."

Servicom's human resources manager Katherine Libby says response from local job seekers has been overwhelming just a day after the announcement. Customer representatives are paid eight dollars and hour plus performance-based bonuses. Company leaders say the Do Not Call list will not affect this contract because workers will be calling Comcast's current customers.
