South Beloit Park Flooded
An unusually wet winter has left a South Beloit city park flooded with little hope of opening this year. Posted: 5:58 PM Mar 3, 2009 |

For many of us, the wet winter has been an annoyance. For one South Beloit city park it has been devastating. Right now much of the park is under large sheets of ice, and the damage cannot be assessed until the spring thaw.
"You can't really tell until everything thaws out how soft everything will be and, you know, what needs to be replaced and, I'm sure it definitely did a number on them." says Matt Lundeblade of the South Beloit Parks Department.
Lundeblade says all the asphalt in the park is ruined, including the bike path, tennis courts, and parking lots. In addition, the football field has been underwater since June, which means the entire field will have to be re-sodded before it can be used. Edwin Pospischil, who has lived next to the park for sixty years misses the children.
"When the park was nice, there were kids down there playing all the time, there was always some activity going on down there. I think the park was a wonderful park. I think it's one of the best parks around here anyway." he says.
City administrators say it could cost several hundred thousand dollars to repair the park. Right now, the park is off limits and the sound of children laughing on the playground has been replaced by the sound of silence.
City administrators say they don't know if they will have enough money to completely repair the park. One option they are considering is just reopening the higher, north side of the park.
