Federal prosecutors Thursday say Michael Feeley is charged with racketeering, extortion, bribery, mail fraud, witness tampering and tax fraud.
Five other men also are charged with bribery for allegedly funneling payoffs and kickbacks to Feeley.
An indictment accuses Feeley of taking the money in return for tree-trimming and street-paving contracts. The indictment says he also traded a city job for a payoff.
Feeley's defense attorney, Michael Ettinger, says he hadn't yet read the indictment and couldn't comment on the charges.
