3rd Annual MLK Day Event at Freeport Boys and Girls Club

FREEPORT (WIFR) -- Gospel music filled the gym Monday evening during the third annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Day event at the Boys and Girls Club in Freeport.

Dozens took part in a praise and worship service. There were also dance performances and local students read portions of King's “Letter from a Birmingham Jail. Community service awards were also handed out to local civil rights activists Bennie Brown and Corrine Bruce. Organizers say the evening was a way to celebrate the past while looking towards the future.

"I think the basic thing is letting the generation of kids coming after us know that this man was so important to our legacy. They need to understand what the struggle was for black people from slavery to the civil rights movement to now. They can be whatever they want to be and they can see that now," says Sheila Suggs of Dr. King. Suggs works for the Boys and Girls Club of Freeport and Stephenson County.

Pastor Kevin Cooler, Sr., from the Freeport First Church of God was the guest speaker for the evening.
