The Federal Communications Commission has ruled SBC communications can offer long-distance service in Illinois, Indiana, Ohio and Wisconsin.
SBC, formerly known as Ameritech, had been pushing for years to offer long-distance in these states. They were last in the company's 13-state service area without the service.
SBC officials and market analysts say the move will mean better deals on long-distance for customers because there will be more competition. The service will begin as early as October 24.
