Farm Aid An Uphill Battle

Senator Dick Durbin says he is fighting an uphill battle to try to overcome opposition from the Bush administration to pass legislation that would include relief for Illinois farmers who suffered through a major drought last year.

The Senate's number-two ranking Democrat says more than 20 senators are a part of a bipartisan coalition trying to forge ahead with an overall disaster assistance measure that would include help for Illinois farmers, among others across the country.

Durbin says he is trying to get a proposal up for a vote in the Senate before the chamber recesses for a month-long break before the November general election.

Durbin says farmers deserve to have members of Congress vote on the issue so they can determine how they will vote for the lawmakers when they seek re-election.
