Beginning Monday, all Illinois children will have to be vaccinated against chicken pox before they can attend school.

Families that object to the vaccine for religious and medical reasons can be exempt from the requirement.

The new requirement is meant to keep the disease from spreading from child to child.

Chicken pox is generally mild but sometimes can be deadly. Children entering childcare or preschool programs also will have to get the shot.
