Safe Passage, DeKalb County's domestic and sexual violence agency, will celebrate their 25th anniversary during Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
This event is offered to raise awareness of the problem of domestic violence, to acknowledge those who have been victimized, and to support and thank individuals and organizations who have contributed to the agency's work throughout the community. Safe Passage began as a group of concerned citizens who saw the need for a safe place for victims of domestic violence. Fifty-five clients were seen the first year and the agency currently sees an average of 350 clients each month. Safe Passage provides a wide range of services including crisis intervention and medical advocacy for victims of domestic and sexual violence, short- and long-term housing for victims and their children, counseling, legal advocacy, children's services, community education, a batterer's intervention program, and a Latina outreach program.
On Monday, October 2nd, Safe Passage will join with the DeKalb Area Women's Center for a community candlelight vigil and program. This year's vigil is called Safe Passage at 25 and will feature art work by Safe Passage clients, a presentation of awards to several honorees, and a presentation by survivors. This event will be held from 6:30pm to 8:30pm at the DeKalb Area Women's Center, 1021 State Street in DeKalb. There is no charge for the event. Refreshments will be provided.
