ROCKFORD, Ill. (AP) - Rockford College has brought in $1.1 million by auctioning off 2,000 works of art from its private collection.
Interim Rockford College President Richard Kneedler says it was sad to see the art go.
But he says the sale was needed because the liberal arts college has accumulated about $10 million in debt over the years.
The school had also amassed three-thousand individual works of art ranging from woodblock prints to European paintings.
Officials at the 1,200-student school say selling some of those works will help pay debt and ensure that the art is properly cared for.
