Rockford College hopes to raise as much as $1 million with an art auction Monday.
The school has too little space to display all the work in its art collection, so about 2,000 pieces are going on sale at a Chicago auction house.
The works include Egyptian and Roman antiquities, and paintings by Danish artist Soren Emil Carlsen and Spanish painter Joan Miro.
Leslie Hindman Auctioneers in Chicago is handling the auction. Bids also can be placed online.
College President Richard Kneedler hopes to reduce the school's debt with proceeds from the auction.
The works represent two thirds of the private school's collection of art.
