Heavy Rains Floods Rockford

ROCKFORD, Ill. (AP) -- Heavy rains this afternoon flooded creeks in Rockford and left parts of the city submerged.

Winnebago County officials say about 40 people have been evacuated from a residential area.

Rescue workers used inflatable boats to take some people from flooded homes and business parking lots.

Tim Seeley of the National Weather Service says an area in southeast Rockford received about six inches of rain during afternoon storms.

At one point, a 22-block area was impassable to vehicles with water standing five or six feet deep.

An official with the Rock River Reclamation District tells the Rockford Register Star that standing water is likely to remain on city streets until at least early tomorrow morning.
