Wednesday marked a new era in Belvidere as the Seth Whitman Elementary School opened its doors for the first time.
Seven-hundred K through 5th graders checked out their new school.
The school is located just north of the newer middle school and right next to the Belvidere North High School, which is currently under construction.
Belvidere voters approved a building referendum a couple years ago to pave the way for the new schools.
District voters will be asked to approve another education fund referendum to help supply the new high school with teachers, staff, and books.
