Bond County Man Dies From West Nile

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) - Illinois health officials say a Bond County man in his 80s has died of West Nile virus, the state's second death attributed to the disease this year.

The Illinois Department of Public Health says the man's August 17th death came from neuroinvasive disease caused by the mosquito-borne virus.

The department said it has received 14 new human cases of West Nile virus, bringing the total for the year to 39.

The state's first attributed death from West Nile this year was a Will County man in his 60s who died last week.

West Nile is transmitted to humans through the bites of mosquitoes that pick up the virus by feeding on the blood of infected birds.
