Cultivating and developing minority business has been a priority for the Rockford area Chamber of Commerce. Sunday, one of Rockford's most heavily concentrated minority communities held an expo to try to reach some career goals.
The Multicultural Expo gave Rockford's long neglected westside entrepreneurs the opportunity to show off their wares and introduce themselves to the community. Minority business owners showcased their inventory and business versatility with exotic paintings, carvings, and gift baskets.
Flora Cousins was one of the entrepreneurs at the expo. Flora wrote a book for adults and children and says the title speaks for itself and wants to spread the message to people all over the world. She says the expo has given her community of minority business owners and hopefuls a voice.
According to the U.S. Small Business Association, only 15 percent of businesses are minority owned nationwide. Booth owners say it's expos like these that will increase those numbers.
