Tuesday is Tax Day

By  |

Last year local law enforcement officials proposed a plan to the Winnebago County Board to impose a one-cent sales tax in the county to pay for the new jail. In April, that referendum passed and goes into affect this week.

Starting this Tuesday, be prepared to pay one-cent more when you head out to pick up a few items from the store. This one-cent sales tax will generate more than 23 million dollars a year for Winnebago County to help pay off a loan taken out to build the new jail. Voters approved the penny hike in April and still say they don't mind paying it.

The tax doesn’t include prescription drugs or groceries. The money generated from the tax hike is handled in Springfield. The Winnebago County Board expects to see the first check in October.
