It was supposed to be 20 minutes of public comment on why the village of Rockton should or should not ban smoking. The public opinion was extremely one sided, but that doesn't mean the ban is snuffed out yet.
The proposal would have been to ban smoking in all public places including outdoors in village owned parks. Business owners said Tuesday night that 90 percent of their customers were smokers and a smoking ban would force them to close their doors.
Village trustee Dennis Meade believes some of the other trustees feared civil liberty issues, while others were influenced by business owner testimony, but he hasn't given up.
The proposal died because none of the village trustees seconded the motion. That means Meade could bring it up at any time. He told 23 News he will do some more organizing and possible bring it up again in October.
