After being closed for almost a year, the satellite jail in downtown Rockford will reopen in mid-September.
The jail was shut down because the county could no longer afford to keep it open. But a new plan approved by the Winnebago County board Thursday night will change that.
The county will sell bonds backed by the one cent sales tax increase, which goes into effect July 1. Those funds will not only allow the jail to reopen.
The county will also be able to hire more attorneys, correctional officers and clerks in the criminal justice system.
Criminal justice officials are hoping the opening of the satellite jail will ease jail overcrowding issues.
