The survey released today by three consumer advocacy organizations found that prescription drug retail prices vary dramatically throughout Illinois.
The telephone survey looked at seven popular prescription drugs sold at 27 pharmacies in nine of the state's most populous cities.
It found the price for the anxiety drug Alprazolam ranged from about 15 dollars a month in Champaign to more than 86 dollars in Springfield, a difference of nearly 500 percent.
And there was a 235 percent difference in price for that drug at two different pharmacies in Springfield.
The groups say the study should show consumers the benefits of shopping around for the best price on prescriptions.
