State to Consider Buying Island to Halt Development

Developers have proposed 50 log homes and a marina on Plum Island. The Island is a habitat for bald eagles that draws thousands of visitors every winter to the park along the Illinois River.

Lieutenant Governor Pat Quinn says the project would destroy "one of the most scenic places in our state.'' Quinn says state ownership would be the "ultimate best protection'' for the island, which also contains American Indian burial sites.

Spokesman John Wendland said developers are willing to consider selling the island.

The developers will host open houses on the island this weekend for prospective buyers and hope to have houses up by the 2004 boating season.
