Six Months Confinement for Stealing Christmas Cards

Instead of delivering his assigned mail just before Christmas, Ronald Franklin dumped some 3,700 pieces of mail in his Chicago home.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Timothy Chapman says Franklin opened about 225 holiday cards in search of cash to feed a drug habit.

The letter carrier was charged after his landlord told police that he found several Postal Service boxes filled with mail in a closet.

A federal judge in Chicago Tuesday ordered Franklin to be confined in a Salvation Army work-release center.
