Crashes Involving Large Trucks Drop in Wisconsin

The Department of Transportation says there were about 7,800 large truck crashes in 2005, resulting in 94 fatalities. One of the more notable crashes was the one between a semi and charter bus near Osseo last fall that killed five people.

Transportation officials say the number of crashes is the lowest in 16 years.

State Patrol Captain Chuck Teasdale attributes the decline to improved inspection techniques. He says law enforcers are working with trucking companies and industry groups to educate drivers about safety issues.

Teasdale says the number of crashes this year is on track to match last year, or come in lower.
