The smoke was visible for miles as the northeast corner of the Motel 8l burned Saturday afternoon.
Firefighters battled the blaze for several hours, trying to gain control of it and salvage the motel. The blaze appeared to have started in the northeast corner of the motel forcing firefighters to fight the blaze from multiple angles and bringing life at the corner of south and south west streets to a standstill.
Police shut down streets around the motel as firefighters tried to gain control. Witnesses on the scene say police did this because it was nearly impossible to drive in the area.
"There was a lot of smoke. It covered the street, I think that's the initial reason why they blocked it off, at least on the west side of the street," says Corey Wassell, who witnessed the blaze.
The fire department says the fire started on the east side of the building and spread to the attic, but then pretty much engulfed the whole building. The fire is out at this time, but there is extensive building damage. We have now confirmed that those who were staying at this motel got out safely. There is no word on how many people were staying there at this time.
