“Leave your butts at the door”, that could soon be the slogan in Machesney Park. Several village leaders want to clear the smoke and snuff out smoking in their town. Monday night the Public Health and Safety Committee heard why many think Machesney Park should be smoke free. Apparently the arguments were convincing because now the committee is working to draft a smoke-free ordinance. The measure would ban smoking in all work and public places.
Doug Aurand, Harlem Township Supervisor says, “Eight people will die today in Illinois of second hand smoke. 40,000 people will die in this country this year of second hand smoke and it doesn't have to happen."
The board of trustees ultimately has the final say. If passed the ban could take effect by July of 2007. Currently 20 cities in Illinois are smoke-free.
