The director of emergency preparedness for the Cook County Department of Public Health says Thursday’s bioterrorism drill went smoothly.

Director Richard Scott says medical staff have cycled through hundreds of mock patients.

The drill this morning involved both a simulated building explosion and the mock release of a toxic chemical in the Chicago suburb of Bedford Park. By afternoon, authorities say 600 emergency workers will be on the scene.

In nearby Bridgeview, authorities turned a community center into a medical facility to pass out faux antibiotics to people worried they had been exposed to the deadly plague that was an earlier part of the drill.

It's all part of a five-day exercise designed to determine how prepared the country is to respond to a bioterrorist attack.
