Durbin: Guantanamo Should Be Closed by End of 2006

The Illinois Democrat just returned from a fact-finding trip to the base.

Durbin says the goal should be to close the prison camp by the end of 2006.

He says despite the best efforts of American troops, Guantanamo has become a powerful, negative symbol around the world for failures of the Bush administration.

Durbin spoke on the same day the Bush administration said all Guantanamo detainees are entitled to protections under the Geneva Conventions. That appears to change the administration's earlier insistence that the detainees are not prisoners of war and thus not subject to the Geneva protections.
