A Rockford man is facing up to a year in jail for hosting cockfights at his home.
Gregory Konitski pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor animal cruelty charge. Konitski originally faced seven different counts, but in exchange for a plea, prosecutors dropped a count of domestic battery, two drug charges and several other charges relating to the inhumane care of animals.
Konitski was arrested last July. At that time, Winnebago County sheriff’s deputies responded to a domestic disturbance call at his home. An estimated 300 to 400 roosters and hens were discovered, plus a fighting arena and razor blades and spurs used in cockfighting.
Authorities believe that Konitski hosted rooster fights about once or twice a month in a barn on the property.
